  32.    Netscape Navigator Gold 3.0b4 Version is being distributed as both
  33.    a 16-bit Windows program and a 32-bit Windows program. Both
  34.    16-bit Windows program and 32-bit Windows program have a 
  35.    Standard version that includes the Plug-ins and a Minimum 
  36.    version that does not include the Plug-ins.
  37.  
  38.    If you are running Windows 3.x or WFW, you MUST use the
  39.    16-bit Navigator even if you have Win32s installed. If you are
  40.    running Windows 95 or Windows NT, use the 32-bit Navigator. To
  41.    run the 32bit Navigator, you MUST have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack.
  42.    Both Windows 95 and Windows NT provide 32bit TCP/IP stacks
  43.    that you can setup.

  45.    To obtain a copy of Netscape Navigator, first download one of
  46.    the self-extracting executable files into a temporary directory:

  51.    First double click on the self-extracting
  52.    file in the File Manager, then run the setup.exe program to
  53.    install Netscape Navigator on your machine.

  57.   release, you will get multiple uninstall entries in your
  58.   Add/Remove program.  If you prefer not having multiple
  59.   entries, you should do an uninstall to remove your previous

  62. * NAPLAYER, the Netscape audio player, will only work if you have
  63.   a sound card installed and configured properly. It will not work
  64.   with the PC speaker driver. Please check your sound card manual
  65.   to configure the sound card.

  68.   problems running Cooltalk with Matrox MGA Millennium graphic

  131. What do I need to run Netscape Navigator?
  132.  
  133. You must have a direct Internet connection before you can use
  134. Netscape. The ability to send and receive e-mail does not
  135. necessarily mean you can run Netscape. There are three
  136. requirements for Netscape Navigator:
  137.  
  138.     1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a dialup
  139.        SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service provider.
  140.  
  141.     2. TCP/IP stack
  142.  
  143.     3. Netscape Navigator software
  144.  
  145. You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a service
  146. provider in your area.  You will need to get a SLIP or a PPP
  147. account from an Internet provider (for a dialup account).
  148.  
  149. When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have a
  150. TCP/IP stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file.
  151.  
  152. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" when
  153. running Netscape Navigator, this means your computer is looking
  154. for the WINSOCK.DLL file that is part of a winsock package.

  160. The Netscape installer will overwrite existing OLE2 DLLs with the
  161. latest versions for US Windows. This will not affect 32-bit
  162. Windows. For 16-bit Windows, the only difference between the US
  163. and the Japanese versions are the internationalization of error
  164. strings. Occasionally, the Japanese user may see an English
  165. language OLE2 error message after installing Netscape. Currently,
  166. there are no Japanese versions available for the OLE2 DLLs.
  167. Netscape is working with Microsoft to make the Japanese version of
  168. the OLE2 DLLs available.

  172.               Information about Quicktime Plug-ins

  176. This part describes what you will need and how to use the
  177. Windows version of Apple's QuickTime plug-ins for Netscape
  178. Navigator 3.0.
  179.  
  180. WHAT THE PLUG_IN DOES:
  181.  
  182. Apple's QuickTime plug-in for Netscape Navigator 3.0 or
  183. later lets you experience QuickTime content directly in the
  184. Navigator browser window. You no longer need a "helper
  185. application" like MoviePlayer to view QuickTime content with
  186. Navigator 3.0. You can also view QuickTime VR Panoramas and
  187. Objects inline, after downloading the QuickTime VR component
  188. from Apple. As a web developer, you can control the
  189. QuickTime playback experience through HTML commands. You can
  190. choose to have a movie automatically played for a user, or
  191. present a controller giving users the ability to play, stop,
  192. fastforward, and rewind.

  194. The QuickTime plug-in works with existing QuickTime movies,
  195. and with movies prepared to take advantage of the plug-in's
  196. "fast start" feature. The "fast start" feature will present
  197. the first frame of the movie almost immediately and can
  198. begin playing even before the movie has been completely
  199. downloaded. The "fast start" feature saves you time waiting
  200. for the entire movie to download, but otherwise plays just
  201. like regular QuickTime movie.
  202.  
  203. Netscape Navigator will use the QuickTime plug-in
  204. automatically to play any QuickTime movie while browsing the
  205. internet.  The plug-in can play many kinds of QuickTime
  206. movies (.mov files) including movies with text, MIDI, and
  207. other kinds of data. If you have downloaded and installed
  208. the QuickTime VR component, it will also let you interact
  209. with QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects.

  225. You can obtain the QuickTime plug-in by downloading Netscape
  226. Navigator 3.0 (http://home.netscape.com). Please make sure
  227. you have downloaded the plug-in that is most appropriate for
  228. the computer you are using.

  230. * QuickTime VR
  231. If you would like to view QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality)
  232. Panoramas and Objects using the QuickTime plug-in, you will
  233. need the QTVR library for Windows (QTVRW.QTC). The QTVR 
  234. software is *not* included with Netscape Navigator 3.0, 
  235. but you can download them from either the Apple QuickTime VR
  236. site (http://qtvr.quicktime.apple.com) or the QuickTime
  237. Software page (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  239. On Windows, the QTVRW.QTC file must be in the WINDOWS
  240. directory of your primary drive.

  258. site, you must quit Netscape Navigator and move the software
  259. to the appropriate location (see above).  When you relaunch
  260. Navigator, the plug-in will be loaded and ready to use.

  278. Q: Should Windows users download the 16-bit or 32-bit
  279. version of the QuickTime plug-in, or both?
  280. A: First of all, if you are using Netscape Navigator 3.0,
  281. you do not need to download the plug-in, it is bundled with
  282. Navigator 3.0.  But beyond that,  definitely *not* both.
  283. Download the version of the plug-in that matches the version
  284. of Navigator you are running. If you are not sure which
  285. version you are running, look inside the PLUGINS folder in
  286. your NETSCAPE folder. If you see Npnull16.dll, you are using
  287. 16-bit Navigator. If you see Npnull32.dll, you are using
  288. 32-bit Navigator.

  290. Q: I am running Windows '95 (or NT). I downloaded the
  291. QuickTime VR software (QTVRW.QTC), installed it in my
  292. WINDOWS directory, and rebooted. But When I run Navigator
  293. with the QuickTime VR component, I can't view QuickTime VR
  294. Panoramas and Objects.
  295. A: Currently there is only a 16-bit version of the QuickTime
  296. VR software for Windows. The 16-bit version will not work
  297. with a 32-bit (Windows '95/NT) version of Netscape
  298. Navigator. If you would like to use the QuickTime VR
  299. software with Navigator, you will have to download and use
  300. the Windows 3.1 version of Netscape Navigator. When a 32-bit
  301. version of the QuickTime VR component is available for
  302. Windows '95/NT users, we will post it on the QuickTime web
  303. site (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  305. Q: I downloaded Netscape Navigator 3.0, but the QuickTime
  306. plug-in doesn't seem to be working.
  307. A: Navigator 3.0 lets you pick plug-ins for different types
  308. of content, just like you pick helper apps. You may need to
  309. pick the QuickTime plug-in in the Navigator
  310. "Options/Helpers" dialog to make the QuickTime plug-in work.

  312. Q: I am using a Web browser other than Netscape Navigator
  313. 3.0 and I am experiencing problems with the QuickTime
  314. plug-in.
  315. A: Currently, the QuickTime plug-in only supports Netscape
  316. Navigator 3.0 or later.

  318. Q. I design web pages and would like to know more about
  319. movie controls and other capabilities of the QuickTime
  320. plug-in. Where should I look for documentation?
  321. A: The QuickTime plug-in provides a number of new and
  322. exciting options for internet content providers. Please

  326. Q: I am browsing a page with a QuickTime VR panorama and
  327. expect that I can use the option and control (shift and
  328. control on Windows) to zoom in/zoom out of the movie.
  329. Likewise, with a regular QuickTime movie, I expect the arrow
  330. keys to step through the movie a frame at a time. But the
  331. movies don't seem to respond to keystrokes.
  332. A: You need to select the QuickTime VR panaroma or QuickTime
  333. movie first by clicking on it. On Windows, the arrow keys do
  334. not work.
  335.  
  336. Q. I'd like to save some of the movies to my hard drive. How
  337. do I do this?
  338. A. You can click on the movie and press Command-S on the
  339. Macintosh or Control-S on the PC to bring up a "save"
  340. dialogue. However, this will not work for QuickTime VR
  341. movies. To save QuickTime VR movies go to the Navigator 3.0
  342. menu, select Options/General Preferences/Helpers, then
  343. select QuickTime from the list and choose Edit. At this
  344. point, you'll be presented with a few options, all will work
  345. for saving QuickTime VR files.
